Electrochemical Processor
The Rank Brothers Electrochemical Processor comprises a high quality Potentiostat and Galvanostat. These are designed to be used for controlled potential and controlled current microelectrode techniques, respectively. The two circuits are completely separate enabling them to be used simultaneously.

The Potentiostat
The Potentiostat circuit features:
- Large dynamic range (0.01 to 100 microamps).
- Switchable active low pass filter to remove unwanted noise.
- Current offset facility to enable small changes on a large background current to be easily monitored.
When used in the usual three electrode mode (i.e. working, reference and counter electrode) this device controls the voltage across the working electrode/counter electrode pair. The voltage (and therefore the current) is adjusted to maintain the potential difference between the working and reference electrodes, which is sensed through a high impedance feedback loop. The cell output provides a measure of the current that flows between the working electrode and the counter electrode.
This device is the basic instrument for the measurement of current at constant potential and, thus it will find direct application in techniques such as: amperometric titrations, electrogravimetry, coulometry (at constant potential), stepwise polargraphy and voltammetry. When coupled to a suitable signal generator, it can be used to perform a wide variety of polargraphic/voltammetric methods (including single sweep, single step, triangular wave, cyclic voltammetry/polarography).
When used in the two electrode mode (i.e. working and counter electrode) the Potentiostat maintains a controlled potential difference between the two electrodes allowing the monitoring of any resultant current. If, as in many cases, the counter is also the reference electrode and substantially bigger than the working electrode, the system will function very similarly to a three electrode cell.
The Galvanostat
When used in the three electrode mode this device maintains a controlled constant current between the working electrode and the counter electrode. This allows the monitoring of the potential between the electrodes as a function of time (chronopotentiometry).
This device is the basic instrument for the measurement of potential at constant current and, therefore, finds direct application in techniques such as simple step chronopotentiometry, electrogravimetry and coulometry (constant current).
When used in two electrode mode the Galvanostat maintains a controlled current between the two electrodes, which is often the situation needed when electroplating materials, e.g. Platinisation.
The System Monitor
The system monitor displays the outputs from the Potentiostat and Galvanostat on the voltmeter (i.e. plating voltage and cell output for the Galvanostat and polarising voltage and cell output for the Potentiostat). The Monitor contains two overload lamps indicating possible cell fault conditions.
